Chapter Five:

In Which Fire Fights Ice and Family Intervenes

I leaned against the wall of the large room, watching in frustration as my lover tended to our attacker. It wasn’t that I blamed him. In fact, I would have been surprised if he hadn’t done exactly that. I was angry at myself for pushing him into talking about something he was obviously not ready to discuss.

Yesterday, he’d said he’d work on not blaming himself for every single thing that went wrong. Back at the river bank, we’d been so comfortable with each other. I should have known better than to believe that the progress we’d made would make Red forget about his traumatic past. Scars like that didn’t just disappear.

We were currently in a room in Red’s cottage which I hadn’t originally noticed—his brother’s quarters. It was actually built underground, which had surprised the hell out of me until Red had explained his brother needed the space and liked to be down here. Apparently, it kept him connected to the earth. It made me think that he made a good match for a vampire female. On my side, I hated it down here. My beast felt caged and restless. Or maybe that was just because of my argument with Red.

The worst thing was that I didn’t even know what to say to make it better. I could see so clearly that my mate was poisoning himself with self-hatred, but Red refused to listen, and I couldn’t blame him. And now, he was studiously ignoring me, tending to Will Scarlet like I wasn’t even there.

Gritting my teeth, I watched my mate’s soft hands touch another man’s skin and forced myself to endure it. It didn’t matter. Red was a healer. He didn’t care about this man romantically. Just the idea was laughable, because he’d been the one to blast him in the first place.

I managed to cling to that thought until Will finally stirred on the bed. “Red?” the hunter asked, his voice a hoarse murmur. “What on Avalon happened?”

“You don’t remember?” Red inquired in turn.

Will reached for his head, grimacing. “I remember…I was hunting when I found some unusual tracks. I allowed the earth to guide me and then…there was a large feline. It attacked you. What…Where is it?”

The hunter’s memories obviously suffered from some holes, since he didn’t seem to recall Red using fire magic. Red fell silent for a few moments as he wrapped another bandage around Will’s arm. “It’s gone,” he finally said.

Will groaned. “Damn it. Goddess only knows whom it will attack next. How did you run into it, Red? I have to gather the rest of the men and hunt it down.”

“You’re not hunting anything down right now,” Red shot back bitingly. “You’re getting some sleep and resting until you recover. Leave the panther be. It’s not dangerous.”

“Red, you know I…I love the earth’s gifts as much as you do, but…I can’t…agree with you on this one. Goddess only knows…what the panther would have done if I hadn’t gotten there.
